In order for us to find an area without clouds last night to photograph the “Christmas Star” – the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn – Whitney Hall and I drove 100 miles west, the last 10 of which was along a dirt road leading us to McCartney Mountain outside Twin Bridges, Montana. This was photographed in the last remaining moments of astronomical dusk, when Jupiter and Saturn were nearing the horizon. A partial moon was perfect to add some light to the snow in the area.

The planning started a few days ago looking at weather reports trying to find a cloud-free sky up to 200 miles from home, because the forecast for home was too cloudy. The day of the shoot I narrowed down a large area of where it was expected to be less than 20% cloud cover just 100 miles away.

I spent a few hours on google maps trying to find a photogenic area where we were planning on going to, with no conclusive results. So we left the house at 3pm hoping for the best – both that my weather reports were correct and that we’d find a decent place to photograph it.

As the sun was setting we found ourselves pulled over the side of the road in Twin Bridges. We were looking for a scenic area in a wide flat valley and running out of time. While seeing the Highland Mountains in the near distance, Whitney had been studying the topo map and noticed some dirt roads going towards them. Using a star app on our iPhones, the topo map, and our instincts, we got to this location at the perfect time.

A true team effort and Whit deserves a bunch of credit for getting us there.

Yesterday Whitney Hall and I made a day trip to Yellowstone National Park. It was the first time we have ever been in the park in January. When we used to winter in Arizona it made getting to the park rather difficult 😉, and not being able to experience Yellowstone in the winter was one of the worst parts of going to AZ.

After yesterday’s trip, we got a great look at what we’ve been missing all this time – sunrise in Mammoth with the snow & steam with 15F temps, coyotes, bison, elk, bighorn sheep, and more. We will definitely be making regular trips this winter! We only live 2hrs away…

We had an awesome hour and a half following this river otter along a mile of the Lamar River. At one point we were with a large group of photographers but by the time we got this shot it was just the 2 of us with him/her ☺.

Leaving Bozeman the other morning at 5:30am Whitney and I arrived at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park as planned just before sunrise.

Not only was it my first time photographing at Mammoth at sunrise but it was my first time ever walking around the boardwalk along the hot springs. I’ve been in Yellowstone a bunch of times now, just never walked around that area.

What an awesome experience it was! While Whitney stayed warm in the truck with the dogs, I walked about 2 miles photographing in the 15F degree weather and pretty much had the place to myself – only saw 3 other people the entire time I was out there 😊.

Here is the latest from my home studio in Bozeman, Montana with my continued experiments with Ultraviolet Induced Visible Fluorescence (UVIVF) photography.

For this image, I floated an aster flower in a fish tank, and in complete darkness I shined some UV lights on my subject while carefully placing drops of different colored neon acrylic artist ink throughout.

The painterly look I achieved was all done in-camera using my Olympus OM-D E-M1X camera and M.Zuiko 12-100mm f4 Pro lens while using the Live Comp feature. As the acrylic ink slowly sank, the camera recorded this new light while not overexposing the rest of the image allowing me to easily control this long exposure.

The winner of the People’s Choice Award at the 2016 Art for Horses Museum Show in Parker, Colorado, this was photographed at the 97th annual Crow Fair in Montana. The event is one of the largest pow-wows in the U.S. It is hosted by the Crow Nation and includes numerous Indian tribes.

I photographed this paint horse in full color during one of the many parades. In my digital darkroom I converted it to black & white and then I allowed some of the original color in the beadwork to shine through.
