Aluminum Limited Editions

These photos are printed on aluminum by infusing dyes directly into specially coated aluminum sheets providing a magical luminescence and stunning look. Colors are extremely vibrant with great image detail. Available with your choice of High Gloss (standard and most popular) featuring vibrant color & contrast, Semi Gloss for a slightly less reflective print, and Matte finish for the least amount of reflection at the expense of some contrast. (request semi gloss or matte finish in the Add Notes section when ordering otherwise High Gloss will be ordered).

My signature is engraved in the lower right-hand corder next to the printed Limited Edition number. The finished piece features the aluminum mounted onto a 1/4" black Sintra backing and recessed aluminum frame and comes ready to hang with attached wire. As an option you can order your aluminum print with a flush-mounted aluminum frame instead of the float (request this finish in the Add Notes section when ordering).

Acrylic Limited Editions

For the absolute best in quality and presentation choose an Lumachrome Acrylic Print.

Lumachrome Acrylic Prints feature unbelievable resolution, razor sharp clarity and details, and unsurpassed vibrancy and contrast with an incredible 3D image quality & dimensionality that makes the photo appear backlit and almost holographic.

The print, which includes my digital signature and edition number in lower right-hand corner, is sandwiched between 1/8" acrylic and a 6mm Comatex protective backing with a recessed genuine Roma wood frame. Available standard with a high gloss Acrylic, a low reflection Acrylic is also an option for an added cost. If interested in the low reflection Acrylic, contact me first for pricing before placing your order.

Note: Acrylic prints are not recommended for high traffic locations that could potentially result in numerous people touching the print. In those situations I recommend the Aluminum prints instead.

How did I create this image?

It started with some planning earlier in the day. I was scouting new locations for my upcoming photo workshop and came across this scene. Using the Sky Guide app I figured out exactly what time I needed to come back to get the Milky Way rising above the water.

Later that night I brought one of my students out here who hired me for a private session. It was a little spooky out there in the darkness with the loud roar of the water which would make it difficult to hear any animals approaching. But we were well prepared with bear spray out & ready and I scanned the area often with my headlamp between shots.

In order to have optimum detail & little noise, I took 10 shots to then stack & blend in Starry Landscape Stacker which does a great job knocking down the noise in high ISO shots. It was shot at ISO 8000 at f2.8 for 20s with my Sony a7R3 & Tamron 15-35mm lens.

I changed my exposure to 2 minutes for the foreground shot to get the detail in the water & trees. The Tetons doesn’t allow low level lighting at night anymore, but increasing the length of my exposure worked just fine. I shot 7 photos to then stack in SLS for noise control.

Images were first sorted using Mylio then RAW files were sent to Capture One Pro. Next I ran the sky images through SLS and then did the same to the foreground shots. I used both Photoshop & ON1 to mask & blend the foreground shot with the sky. Both PS & Luminar were used to finalize the look.

Want to learn more on how to photograph the Milky Way & process the images? Join me on one of my night sky workshops!
